Indeed, older houses might be charming, but they also gather a lot of dirt, drafts, and humidity over the years, while all of these are not likely to be an issue in newer buildings. There’s a good chance that if you’ve resided in a house constructed before 1990, the air being circulated through your vents has collected more than a temperature-controlled atmosphere, and fixing that issue will require more than just getting a new filter.

Why older homes struggle with air quality in the first place

New houses are made with tighter envelopes, better vapor barriers, and ductwork that’s built to accommodate modern airflow guidelines. Older homes were built with none of that in mind. Ductwork that was installed thirty or forty years ago is frequently under-sized for current HVAC equipment, poorly sealed at its joints, and running through spaces that were never properly insulated – crawlspaces, unconditioned attics, old chimneys that were converted to chases.

Over time, dust and skin particles settle inside those runs. Couple that with gaps in the building envelope, and you have a home that’s always pulling in outside contaminants while re-circulating whatever you’ve already built up indoors. The EPA’s TEAM studies found that indoor air pollution can run two to five times higher than outdoor levels, and in some cases more than 100 times higher. Older homes are exactly the sort of structure where that gap tends to sit at the higher end.

This isn’t about one bad filter or a dusty vent cover. It’s a systems problem, and it needs to be treated like one.

Three signs your ducts are part of the problem

Technicians aren’t the only ones capable of noticing the warning signs early on. The majority of homeowners can identify these indicators themselves:

Visible dust plumes. Start up the system and monitor a supply register. If you notice a dust puff when air begins circulating, it means dirt has accumulated inside the duct run and is being discharged directly into your home.
